Why Souvenirs?

The word souvenir is French meaning “memory.” For most people, a souvenir is an item of sentimental value, an object that will remind us of a pleasant journey. It could be anything as a simple trinket from a street vendor to a majestic work of art depicting the place we visited. Synonyms are memento and keepsake. However, a souvenir is not the same as memorabilia, which is connected to a particular historic event or place. For Clay Critters, the souvenir takes final form when it is name-dropped with the locale. Just a little trivia for you. Trivia comes to us from… Oh, never mind!

Yes, it’s a cow’s udder. We have talked about adding this item for years, but it always seemed a strange thing to sell. Then recently a customer wanted them badly and our sculptor had time… The rest, as they say, is bovine history.

Announcing our new line of These Great United States! Each magnet is made from a thick silhouette in “map yellow” with the capitals marked by a Swarovski crystal. Decorating each state are miniature examples of what makes that state great, like their official bird, flower, or tree, or a notable tourist destination. We have all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

We have been getting increased requests for food magnets, such as the Philly Cheesesteak. Our latest addition to our food items is the Red Velvet Cake, a desert popularized in New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. While contemporary recipes call for red food coloring being added to the chocolate cake batter, this wasn’t always the case. The original recipe called for buttermilk or vinegar, the acids turning the cocoa red in color, hence its other name: Devil’s Food cake.
